All the Hopworks brewers are graduates of the prestigious American Brewers Guild
Christian Ettinger
Christian began his brewing career in his parents kitchen. He received 5 credits for a brewing internship at Oregon Fields Brewery during his senior year at the University of Oregon School of Business. After impressing the head brewer at West Brothers Brewery with his kettle scrubbing skills he was soon hired. With three years running West Brothers Brewery under his belt, Christian ventured to Davis, California to complete the Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering course from the American Brewers Guild. A head brewing position with Old World Pub & Brewery soon followed. Old World transitioned into Laurelwood Public House & Brewery where Christian was honored with 2004 World Beer Cup Champion Brewmaster. Christian enjoys traveling the world with Brandie, his wife of ten years, and can say with certainty that his 2 year old son Julian was conceived after a great evening at U Fleku in Prague. Cycling, snowboarding and backpacking are means to the perfect pint!
Ben Love
Ben is an Oregon native. His passion for beer started with a pint at the Horse Brass Pub and a short stint at Belmont Station in 1999. His brewing career began in Appleton, WI at the now defunct Adler Brau Brewery, where he offered to work for free (but they paid him anyway). He worked part-time washing kegs, tanks and doing odd jobs as the Brewers Assistant. At the same time he started the Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering Course through the American Brewers Guild.
In a bid to return to Oregon, he applied for the Assistant Brewer position at the Pelican Pub & Brewery where he worked for three years. During that time the brewery continued a tradition and won multiple honors including Large Brewpub of the Year (2006) and Small Brewpub of the Year (2005) at the Great American Beer Festival, and Champion International Brewery (2005) and the Grand Champion Beer Trophy (2004 & 2005) at the Australian International Beer Awards.
Ben is on the board of the Oregon Brewers Guild. In his spare time he likes live music, hiking, and brunch.
Jaime "Ocho" Rodriguez
Jaime was born and raised in Nebraska. He's brewed at Steelhead in Eugene and Max's Fanno Creek in Tigard. He came to work at HUB after a chance meeting at the Lucky Lab's Barleywine & Big Beer Fest in 2008. He enjoy's camping and VW's.
Matthew Speckenbach
Matthew Speckenbach, better known simply as "Speck", was born and raised in Long Island, NY. He went to college in Pennsylvania where he competed on the fencing team, before leaving the east coast to follow the beer to Portland, OR. He enjoy's live music, drinking and homebrewing beer.
Mike Neubauer
Mike began home brewing with his roomate Pete in B’ham, WA while attending WWU. After graduation, Pete went to S.Korea while Mike went to Oregon in search of a job…in brewing! He landed a gig in Newport working the packaging line at Rogue Nation. Shortly after that, he received a phone call from the Pelican Pub and Brewery to interview for a job in the cellar. Well…he got the job, and from there his immersion in the craft beer industry truly began. He stayed at the Pelican for a little under three years working his way into an assistant brewing position. During that time, he completed the American Brewers Guild course and was part of the Pelican brewing team that won the Large Brewpub of the Year at World Beer Cup (2008).
