We create exceptional beer and food with sustainable business practices that protect our planet and support our community.

Hopworks is a family-owned B Corp brewery founded in Portland Oregon in 2007 by Christian and Brandie Ettinger.

As young entrepreneurs and parents to a toddler and newborn at the time, life was crazy and exciting to say the least, as we navigated our way through the ups and downs of building and operating a new, sustainably focused business. Our goal was simple: combine world-class beer and food together in a cool space and operate as sustainably as possible.  We started with a single pub and 43 talented co-workers and have grown to 2 locations employing 80 people and distributing beer in 6 western states (OR, WA, ID, MT, CO and CA) and Japan. Hopworks continues to brew the delicious beer that remains at the center of everything we do and we love to use its magical powers to gather and to support our community!

Hopworks is grateful for our community support over all the years, and we are more passionate than ever about beer and work hard every day to fulfill orders, exceed expectations, and have fun in the process.

Our History

The Hopworks vision was born when Christian worked in grocery store as a high school student and observed first-hand the excitement brewing around the burgeoning Portland brewing scene of the late 80’s.  He attended University of Oregon Business School and after a sophomore semester studying in Cologne, Germany and a senior internship at Oregon Fields Brewery coupled with some homebrewing, and he knew he would open his own brewery someday.

After assistant and head brewing jobs at Eugene City Brewery he attended the American Brewers Guild in 1998.   After graduating he helped open Old-World Pub and Brewery followed by Laurelwood Brewery where he was awarded 2004 World Beer Cup Champion Brewmaster.  He set out on his own in 2006 when he and his father Roy began the enormous undertaking of building Hopworks in an old tractor showroom SE Portland.

2004

The Ettingers purchased the building that now houses our Powell location. Built in 1948, the structure was originally a showroom for bulldozers. Sunset Fuel Company inhabited the building from 1963 until Hopworks purchased it in 2004. Keeping in mind that remodeling existing buildings is a strong environmentally friendly practice, the building was carefully deconstructed by Lovett Construction and rebuilt using as many reclaimed materials as possible. The brewery and pub were designed with green-building principles in mind, utilizing the most efficient energy-saving equipment and materials affordable with ample bike parking.

2007

Hopworks Urban Brewery was officially founded and we brewed our first batch of beer, Organic Hopworks IPA. We opened our doors and have served local food and sustainable beer ever since! We opened with 48 employees and brewed about 3,500 barrels of beer in our initial year.

2012

In the summer of 2012, we began canning our beer in an effort to reduce fuel consumption during transportation and to protect the quality of our beer. In December, the Oregon Sustainability Board presented Hopworks with the Governor’s Oregon Sustainability Grand Champion Award. The Award promotes and advances the inclusion of sustainable practices in government and the private sector.
Certified B Corporation

2015

We earned our certification as the first B Corporation brewery in the Pacific Northwest and we became the first Salmon-Safe Certified brewery in the world through a Salmon-Safe project grant. We expanded our brewery’s capacity, installed a custom “Cleaning In Place” skid to conserve water, and expanded our core portfolio to include Totally Radler and HUB Cider.

2018

2018 was a monumental year for Hopworks as we charted a course for our future and committed to further investing in our three core values: quality, the environment, and community. In 2018 we celebrated our 10 year anniversary with three unique events that showcased our commitment to the environment: The (B)Earth Day Beer Fest, Salmon-Safe IPA Fest, and the Cascadian Beer Fest. In the Fall, we also opened a new location at the PDX Airport.
