February Community Tap: Friends of the Children

Our Community Tap program is one of the ways we are working to expand our definition of sustainability. Not only do we want to be the best environmental stewards that we can, we also want to keep our community healthy and vibrant. We do this by partnering with local non-profit organizations on a monthly basis. Each Community Tap partner receives 1% of all pint sales at our Powell brew pub during their designated month. We also identify opportunities for Hopworks employees to volunteer with each organization.

In February, our Community Tap partner is Friends of the Children. Their Portland chapter is part of a nationwide organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty through professional mentoring.

Karin Zimmer, Marketing & Community Engagement Strategist at Friends of the Children says this about FotC, “Our model is courageous, unique, and proven. We provide each child with a salaried, professional mentor, who we call a Friend, from kindergarten through graduation. 12 1⁄2 years. No matter what. Moving mentoring out of the volunteer realm ensures the quality, consistency, and commitment needed to help the child create a new story and break the cycle of poverty. We aren’t just changing the stories of the highest ­risk children; we’re also changing the collective stories of our community for the long run. Our work is focused on one child at a time, but it affects everyone.”

Here are three easy ways you also can support Friends of the Children throughout the month of February:

LET’S GO BOWLING! Participate in the FotC annual Bowl-A-Thon on February 21st. Bowling teams are made up of 5 people, and each person is asked to raise $100 through personal sponsors.

GRAB SOME BEER – Come in to Hopworks and grab a couple pints of beer with your friends. We’re sending them 1% of all pint sales, throughout February.

COMMUNITY TAP KICKOFF NIGHT – If you would like to learn more about Friends of the Children you can come to the Community Tap kickoff night. They’ll be at our pub on Wednesday February 4th, at 6pm, to meet people and share information about the work they’re doing in our communities.
